File Manager

Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+M (Cmd+Shift+M on macOS)

The File Manager perspective is a two-pane file manager for copying and moving files between locations. Each panel points at a VFS (Virtual File System) location — local disk, Insight file storage, S3 or any other registered VFS scheme — so you can transfer files between them without leaving Deem Integrator.

  • Toolbar (top) — refresh, copy and file operations that act on the two panels.
  • Bookmarks (left) — saved locations you can jump to.
  • Two file panels (centre and right) — each with its own location and file tree.
  • Messages (bottom) — status and copy/move results.

Each panel is an independent view of one location:

  • The location bar at the top holds the panel’s VFS URI, for example file:///tmp or insightfs://files. Type a location and press Enter, or use Browse… to pick one.
  • The filter box below it narrows the panel to entries whose name matches what you type. All the words must match, accents are ignored, and close-enough spellings still match. It hides non-matching folders too, so clear the filter when you want to navigate again.
  • The file tree lists the folder’s contents with Name, Modified and Size columns. Folders load lazily — expand a folder to load its children.

Double-click a folder to expand or collapse it. Double-click a file to open it in its Deem Integrator editor (the view switches to the File Explorer perspective to show the opened file). The panel you last clicked in is the active panel that folder-creation and delete act on.

Each panel remembers its last location, so the perspective reopens where you left off.

After a copy, move, rename, delete or new folder, only the folders that actually changed are re-read — in both panels, so a location open on both sides stays in step. Your expanded folders and scroll position are kept. Use Refresh when you want to re-read a panel from scratch, for example after something outside Deem Integrator changed the files.

There are two ways to transfer files between panels:

  • Select a file or folder and use the Copy to right / left toolbar buttons (or the right-click menu).
  • Drag and drop an item from one panel onto a folder in the other. The default is to move the item; hold Ctrl to copy instead.

Copies run with a progress dialog. If some files cannot be transferred — for example a file type that is not allowed in the target location — the copy continues with the rest and a summary lists each file that was rejected and why.

The drop target is the folder you drop onto, a file’s parent folder, or the panel’s root. You cannot drop an item onto itself, its own parent, or a subfolder of itself.

Right-clicking in a panel’s tree offers:

  • Open — open the selected file in its editor.
  • Copy to right / left panel — copy the selection to the other panel.
  • Rename… — rename the selected file or folder.
  • Delete — delete the selection.
  • New folder… — create a folder.
  • Refresh — reload the panel.

The bookmarks list on the left gives quick access to locations you use often. Bookmarks are shared with the file-selection dialog used elsewhere in Deem Integrator, so a location saved in one place is available in the other.
